Boris Skalsky founded Dead Heart Bloom in 2006 writing and releasing the self-titled debut record. He followed it in 2007 with an acoustic record called Chelsea Diaries. In 2008, Boris and guitarist Paul Wood, joined by bassist Nathan Goheen and drummer John Hadfield, released a Dead Heart Bloom 3 EP series, each EP exploring a different musical style: Fall In (dream pop); Oh Mercy (rock); and In Chains (ambient folk).
